I guess it was obvious from my ramblings of late:

1) Beauty
2) Work
3) First
4) Aox

Those orders switch back and forth regularly...I also listen to the out-takes of Aox a great deal...and the expanded versions of those from Gold Rd Box Set.

So, my question for you all: if you had to pick three songs, and you were told, if you do NOT convert this person that has NEVER heard the DEAD to a stage of at least "yeah, they sound okay..." (ie, if they said "ho hum" they'd put you to death), what would you pick?

I virtually guarantee that each and everyone of you would pick a studio album set of tunes...recall, they've NEVER heard the DEAD. Ave American guy/gal...any age. Rest assured, I would NOT pick 12-29-68 or 9-19-70...whenever I play those for a complete newbie I have to do way too much explaining as it rolls along...

Be honest now.

If it is a live song or three, which ones would you trust your life to?

Box of Rain
Scarlet Begonias
UJB

Although I think I was tasked with introducing someone I might consider Skull and Roses as a better alternative to a true live show. PITB, NFA>GDTRFB and Bertha.

Studio versions of Uncle John's Band, Friend of the Devil, and Ripple. I wholeheartedly agree with you on the supremacy of studio albums for getting a complete newbie to concede that they're pretty good. Close seconds would be Sugar Magnolia and Scarlet Begonias.

I'd take those five to my contest in a heartbeat, CCD. Good ones. I'd offer BDPal, even Attics...or Box. Althea even.

But, even my fav UNJB, the one on the expanded Work, which is actually from 10-4-70, not DEC as listed, wouldn't be the one I'd use over the studio...

And, if I wanted them to hear StSt, I'd (shuddder), even use the Aox over my famed 6-14-68 (even if it was a SBD).

I mostly agree with your "newbie" theory ; but it would depend on the person .
I know people that are not Deadheads, who really love that Live Dead "Dark Star" .
I know a guy who's favorite Dead album is Inferred Roses !
Besides the ,"live versions better" point, the other reasons I don't often listen to the studio albums is that I know them inside out, don't really need to hear them . Also , since I like all the Dead's eras , to some extent, there is always a stack of stuff I haven't listened to yet ! And that is mostly the fault of this site, and the forum posts !
